His Dakota name is Sisoka Duta. In English he is called Joe Bendickson. He is Dakota and is enrolled at the Lake Traverse reservation and is from the Sisseton Wahpeton Nation. He has been learning the Dakota language for 24 years. He taught the Dakota language at the University of Minnesota for 14 years. Now he works at Dakhota Iapi Okhodakichiye (Dakota Language Society) and is the editor of the Dakota language dictionary app. Sisoka Duta loves the Dakota language and wishes it to live into the future. So that’s why he works on the language, creates materials, and teaches the next generation. He was inspired by his mother to start the Dakota language nest. She wanted her children, grandchildren, and all Dakota children to have the opportunity to learn their language. Thanks to the generous support and collaboration with Sheila Williams Ridge and the Child Development Laboratory School, they were able to start the Dakota language nest in September 2022.
